Wildlife Refuge

Eyes are awash with sandhill crane
standing still upon the lake bank.

Four rare whooping cranes spot the woods
in the darkest distant background.

Mallard ducks dart the lake fishing
or frolicking, a few sleeping.

A lone chipmunk rides the rock of
a dry waterfall, cheeks chocked, full

of sunflower seed scavenged from
feeders swayed by frenzied finches.

Among countless other critters,
twelve are human and four of these

are walking through the bald cypress
swamp, while all round it walks through them.
