The opposable thumb comes
in handy for grasping things
yet some things we grasp are hard
to release without clinging.
That thumb helps not in the least
to turn loose a prejudice,
a grudge, a bad memory,
a greedy disposition.
When it comes to letting go
of life, will it be useful?
Could the thumb opposing be
to blame for our gravest grin?
